Comprehensive Brain Health Care for Military Families, Veterans and Children with Autism in Northern Virginia

For military families, veterans, active-duty service members and first responders, health concerns rarely fit neatly into one category. A history of traumatic brain injury may overlap with disrupted sleep, depression, anxiety, hormonal changes, chronic stress, cognitive difficulties, pain and autonomic nervous system dysregulation. A child with autism may simultaneously struggle with sensory processing, communication, regulation, sleep, nutrition, gastrointestinal concerns or other functional health issues.

At Brain Treatment Center NoVA, we believe these concerns deserve more than an isolated approach to individual symptoms.

With locations in Ashburn and Alexandria, Virginia, Brain Treatment Center NoVA provides comprehensive, brain-based and integrative care for patients throughout Northern Virginia, Loudoun County, Fairfax County, Arlington, Alexandria, Washington, DC, Maryland and the greater National Capital Region.

Our model brings together precision TMS, MeRT, qEEG brain mapping, functional and integrative medicine, occupational therapy, SPIN, mental health therapy, integrative psychiatry, IV nutrient therapy and additional brain and nervous system support within one collaborative clinical environment.

For our military community, we also accept TRICARE for covered services and participate in the VA Community Care Network (VACCN) for authorized care.

A Comprehensive Approach to Military and Veteran Brain Health

Brain Treatment Center NoVA is veteran-owned and operated, and caring for the military community is central to why our clinics exist.

Military service can place extraordinary demands on the brain and body.

For some service members and veterans, the effects of those demands become apparent after a recognizable traumatic brain injury or traumatic event. For others, changes accumulate gradually following years of operational stress, repeated blast exposure, disrupted sleep, physical injuries, high sympathetic activation and demanding training or deployment cycles.

The result can be a complicated collection of symptoms that are often treated separately:

  • Depression or changes in mood

  • PTSD and trauma-related symptoms

  • Traumatic brain injury and concussion history

  • Sleep disturbance

  • Cognitive changes or brain fog

  • Difficulty concentrating

  • Irritability and emotional reactivity

  • Chronic stress and nervous system dysregulation

  • Fatigue

  • Changes in physical performance

  • Chronic pain

  • Hormonal or metabolic concerns

Our approach is not to assume that every symptom has the same cause. Instead, our clinicians look at the individual and determine which parts of our model may be appropriate.

TRICARE and VA Community Care in Northern Virginia

Access matters.

Brain Treatment Center NoVA accepts TRICARE for covered services, helping eligible active-duty service members, retirees and military families access covered care through our Northern Virginia clinics.

TRICARE currently identifies outpatient transcranial magnetic stimulation as a covered procedure for adults with major depressive disorder, subject to applicable coverage requirements and authorization.

Brain Treatment Center NoVA also participates in the VA Community Care Network, allowing eligible veterans to receive authorized care in the community when approved by the Department of Veterans Affairs.

VA Community Care is not automatic and generally requires eligibility determination and authorization from the veteran’s VA health care team before treatment with a community provider.

Our team can help patients better understand the administrative process associated with the services available at our clinics.

Precision TMS and MeRT

Neuromodulation is one of the foundations of the Brain Treatment Center NoVA model.

Precision rTMS

Repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation, or rTMS, is a non-invasive form of neuromodulation that uses magnetic stimulation to influence targeted areas of brain activity.

TMS is most established clinically in the treatment of major depressive disorder, with additional protocols and applications depending on diagnosis, clinical indication and regulatory and payer requirements.

At Brain Treatment Center NoVA, our approach emphasizes individualized assessment rather than treating every patient as neurologically identical.

For military members and veterans experiencing depression alongside histories of trauma, TBI, chronic stress or other complex symptoms, this allows the treatment team to consider the larger clinical picture while determining whether TMS is appropriate.

MeRT: Magnetic e-Resonance Therapy

Brain Treatment Center NoVA also provides MeRT, or Magnetic e-Resonance Therapy, a personalized approach to magnetic neuromodulation that incorporates qEEG data into protocol development.

MeRT may be pursued by patients looking for a more individualized brain-based approach. Because coverage varies by indication, payer and treatment, our team discusses insurance and private-pay options with patients before treatment.

We believe in setting realistic expectations: neuromodulation is not a promise of a specific outcome, and individual responses vary.

qEEG Brain Mapping

The electrical activity of the brain provides information that cannot be obtained simply by asking how someone feels.

Quantitative EEG, or qEEG brain mapping, measures patterns of electrical brain activity.

At Brain Treatment Center NoVA, qEEG is incorporated into aspects of our precision neuromodulation model, including MeRT protocol development and clinical monitoring when appropriate.

For military and veteran populations, objective information can be particularly valuable when symptoms such as poor sleep, cognitive changes, mood disturbance, hyperarousal and difficulty regulating stress overlap.

The purpose is not to reduce a complex person to a brain map. It is to add another source of information to the clinical picture.

Functional and Integrative Health: Looking Beyond the Brain Alone

The brain does not operate independently from the rest of the body.

Hormones, nutritional status, inflammation, metabolic health, gastrointestinal function, mitochondrial function, sleep and other physiological processes can influence how a person feels and functions.

That is why functional and integrative health is an important part of our comprehensive model.

Depending on clinical history and individual needs, our medical team may evaluate areas such as:

  • Nutritional status

  • Methylation and relevant genetic pathways

  • Hormonal health

  • Gastrointestinal function

  • Micronutrient status

  • Oxidative stress

  • Cellular and mitochondrial health

  • Environmental or toxicant exposure history

  • Metabolic function

Laboratory testing is selected according to the individual rather than automatically ordering the same panel for every patient.

For veterans and high-performance populations in particular, this approach can be useful when persistent symptoms extend beyond a single psychiatric or neurological diagnosis.

Feeling better matters. Understanding why something may be happening matters too.

Occupational Therapy + SPIN

Brain Treatment Center NoVA’s occupational therapy program goes beyond a conventional model focused only on isolated functional tasks.

Our proprietary SPIN program, Somatic Program for Integrative NeuroBalancing, incorporates occupational therapy with strategies designed to support nervous system regulation and functional performance.

Depending on the patient, treatment may incorporate:

  • Sensory-motor integration

  • Primitive reflex integration

  • Myofascial techniques

  • Breathwork and regulation strategies

  • Visual and auditory activities

  • The Listening Program

  • Movement-based neurological exercises

  • Coregulation strategies

  • Somatic approaches

  • Functional skill development

SPIN is used with both pediatric and adult populations, with programming individualized to developmental and functional needs.

For military members and veterans, this may mean working with the body and nervous system as part of a larger recovery plan.

For children with autism, it may mean addressing sensory processing, regulation, motor patterns and functional participation in everyday life.

Mental Health and Neurobiological Trauma Recovery

Trauma is psychological, but its effects are also experienced throughout the nervous system and body.

Our mental health approach recognizes both.

Brain Treatment Center NoVA provides mental health services that can incorporate evidence-based psychotherapy, trauma-informed approaches, nervous system regulation and collaboration with our medical, occupational therapy and neuromodulation teams when clinically appropriate.

For veterans, active-duty service members and first responders, treatment may address PTSD, depression, anxiety, identity changes, relationship stress, chronic hypervigilance and the transition from high-performance operational environments into everyday life.

Our goal is not simply to teach someone to tolerate symptoms better.

When possible, we want to understand the factors contributing to those symptoms and support meaningful improvement in functioning.

Integrative Psychiatry

Medication can be an important component of mental health treatment, but psychiatric care does not have to exist separately from the rest of a patient’s health.

Our integrative psychiatry model considers psychiatric symptoms within a broader clinical picture.

Depending on the patient’s needs, psychiatric care may include medication management, laboratory assessment, collaboration with functional health providers and coordination with other BTC NoVA clinicians.

For adults who are appropriate candidates, our psychiatric services also include IV ketamine therapy.

Every intervention requires individualized clinical assessment. No single treatment is appropriate for every patient.

Autism Care: A Comprehensive Model for the Whole Child

Military families raising a child with autism often face an additional challenge: finding and rebuilding a care team every time military life requires a move.

At Brain Treatment Center NoVA, we provide a comprehensive model for children and families navigating autism spectrum disorder and other neurodevelopmental concerns.

Rather than assuming autism has one cause or one treatment, we evaluate the individual child’s needs.

Care may incorporate:

MeRT and qEEG brain mapping

Our team may use qEEG-guided neuromodulation as part of an individualized MeRT program when clinically appropriate.

Occupational Therapy + SPIN

Our pediatric OT model addresses sensory processing, regulation, motor development, primitive reflexes, functional skills and nervous system regulation.

Functional and Integrative Health

Selected children may undergo functional laboratory assessment based on their history and clinical presentation. This can include evaluation of nutritional status, gastrointestinal health, methylation, metabolic function and other relevant areas.

Folate Pathways, FRAT Testing and Targeted Leucovorin Therapy

For selected pediatric patients, our medical team may also evaluate folate metabolism and folate receptor autoantibodies (FRAT) when clinically indicated.

When the clinical picture and appropriate testing support its use, the medical team may consider targeted prescription leucovorin (folinic acid) therapy as part of an individualized treatment plan.

Leucovorin is not presented as a universal treatment for autism. Its use should be determined by an appropriately licensed medical provider after considering the child’s history, laboratory findings, medications, potential risks and overall clinical picture.

This is an example of what comprehensive care means to us: identifying potentially relevant biological pathways when appropriate rather than assuming every child needs the same intervention.

Neurofeedback Coming to Brain Treatment Center NoVA

Brain Treatment Center NoVA is also expanding its brain-based services with neurofeedback anticipated to begin in fall 2026.

Neurofeedback uses real-time information about brain activity to help individuals learn to influence patterns of neurological regulation.

It is distinct from TMS and MeRT. Rather than magnetically stimulating targeted brain activity, neurofeedback uses feedback and learning.

Adding neurofeedback gives our clinicians another non-invasive tool that may be used independently or integrated into a larger care plan when appropriate.

IV Nutrient Therapy and Supportive Wellness Services

For appropriate patients, Brain Treatment Center NoVA also offers supportive services that can complement a broader treatment plan.

These include IV nutrient therapy, red light therapy, hyperbaric oxygen therapy (HBOT), PEMF and other wellness modalities, with availability and appropriateness determined by location, age and individual clinical circumstances.

These services are not substitutes for appropriate medical or mental health treatment. They are tools that may be incorporated thoughtfully into a larger plan when indicated.

Why Comprehensive Care Matters

One of the greatest frustrations for families with complex health concerns is fragmentation.

One provider treats mood.

Another looks at hormones.

Another addresses sensory processing.

Another manages medication.

Another focuses on the brain injury.

And the patient is left trying to determine how everything connects.

Brain Treatment Center NoVA was intentionally developed around a different question:

What happens when we look at the whole person?

Our clinicians work within their individual scopes of practice while collaborating across disciplines when appropriate.

That can bring together:

Brain function + nervous system regulation + physical health + functional medicine + occupational therapy + psychiatry + mental health + neuromodulation.

It does not mean every patient receives every service.

It means we have more tools available to determine what an individual patient may actually need.

When Conventional Care Hasn’t Been Enough, It May Be Time to Look Deeper

Complex symptoms do not always have simple explanations.

A veteran struggling after years of operational exposure is more than a PTSD diagnosis.

A person living with the effects of TBI is more than a collection of symptoms.

A child with autism is more than a diagnostic label.

And a military family trying to navigate all of this deserves a care team willing to look at the bigger picture.

At Brain Treatment Center NoVA, our mission is to provide thoughtful, individualized and comprehensive care while staying grounded in appropriate clinical evaluation and realistic expectations.

Whether that means precision TMS, MeRT, qEEG brain mapping, functional medicine, occupational therapy and SPIN, mental health therapy, integrative psychiatry, neurofeedback or supportive wellness services, the starting point is the same:

Understand the individual first. Then determine what tools make sense.
