How Stress, Inflammation, and Nervous System Regulation Influence Recovery

For years, depression was commonly described as a “chemical imbalance.” While brain chemistry certainly plays a role, neuroscience has revealed a much bigger picture. At the center of this communication network is the vagus nerve.


Often called the body’s communication highway, the vagus nerve connects the brain to the heart, lungs, digestive tract, and many other organs. It constantly sends information between the brain and body, helping regulate stress, inflammation, digestion, sleep, heart rate, and emotional resilience.


When this system functions well, the body can respond to stress and then return to a state of recovery. When it becomes dysregulated, people may begin living in survival mode without realizing it.


What Is the Vagus Nerve?


The vagus nerve is the longest cranial nerve in the body and one of the primary components of the parasympathetic nervous system, often referred to as the “rest and recover” system.


While many people assume the brain controls the body, the communication goes both directions. In fact, approximately 80% of the nerve fibers within the vagus nerve carry information from the body back to the brain (Breit et al., 2018).


That means your digestion, immune system, inflammation, and even your gut bacteria continuously influence how your brain functions.


The brain isn’t operating alone. It’s listening to the rest of your body every second of every day.


When the Nervous System Gets Stuck


Stress is meant to be temporary.

Your body is designed to respond to danger and then recover once the threat has passed.


But modern life often doesn’t work that way.

It also affects the brain.

Research has shown that inflammatory molecules called cytokines can influence motivation, energy, concentration, mood, and emotional regulation.

Over time, chronic inflammation may reduce neuroplasticity, the brain’s ability to adapt and form healthy new connections.

This is one reason why depression often looks different from person to person.

There is rarely one single cause.


Recovery Is More Than Symptom Management


The encouraging news is that the nervous system is remarkably adaptable.

Research into vagus nerve stimulation has demonstrated improvements in some individuals with treatment-resistant depression, highlighting the important role of the vagus nerve in emotional regulation and recovery (Conway et al., 2024).
